Description

Academy Theatre's Center Street location is currently closed as they relocate to a new venue.

Academy Theatre is the oldest professional theatre in Georgia. Founded in 1956 by Frank Wittow, Academy Theatre began as the Southeastern Academy of Theatre and Music, Inc. and soon housed both a School of Performing Arts and a resident company dedicated to the best of classical and contemporary work. Academy Theatre pioneered a number of developments in Atlanta's professional theatre community, such as being the first professional theatre in the South to be integrated, premiering the first Southeastern Shakespeare festival (1960), and breaking new ground with its educational theatre programs in the 1960s and 1970s.
