On April 12, 1862, James J. Andrews and a band of Union spies stole the locomotive "The General" from under the watchful eyes of guards at nearby Camp McDonald. In The Great Locomotive Chase visitors can follow in the footsteps of Confederate Conductor William Fuller as he chases "Andrews Raiders" on a dramatic tour featuring an exciting movie about the chase, a façade of the Lacy Hotel, a tunnel and "The General" itself.
Railroads: Lifelines of the Civil War tells stories of the significant roles railroads played in the Civil War. Their contributions to troop movement, hospital care and supplies are depicted through photographs and artifacts in this exhibit.
The Glover Machine Works: Casting a New South collection comes to life with a reproduction of the Glover factory, featuring the only restored belt-driven locomotive assembly line in the country, original machining equipment, and two restored Glover locomotives in various stages of assembly.
