Event Description
March is the month when French speakers and Francophiles from around the world unite to celebrate the French language and the diversity of Francophone cultures. Atlanta's "Francophonie Festival 2013," now in its 14th year, offers free and ticketed cultural events at the Alliance Française in Midtown. Highlights include an award-winning animated film for kids, world-class films from Quebec and Switzerland, a lecture with internationally known illustrator Pascal Lemaître of Belgium, and a friendship brunch at Violette restaurant.
Schedule of events:
March 16 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: French Immersion Day
The festival begins with workshops for middle school and high school French students as well as for French teachers. Students will learn about diverse French speaking countries, hear from keynote speaker Lucie Vaikinnouo-Brinson, and create art.
March 19 at 7 p.m.: "Incendies (Fire)"
In this Quebecois film, two twins are stunned to receive envelopes from unexpected people during the reading of their mother's will. This film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film in 2011, won eight awards at the 31st Genie Awards, and was considered as one of the 10 best films by the New York Times in 2011.
March 22 at 7 p.m.: "La Vraie Vie Est Ailleurs (Real Life Is Elsewhere)"
In this Swiss film, a scientist is on his way to a lecture in Marseille, another man is heading to Berlin to see his newborn son, and a Swiss-born Italian woman is moving to Naples. The lives of these three strangers intersect on a train platform in Geneva, and are forever changed. This movie is for a more mature audience, and there will be a welcome reception before the screening. Works by Belgium illustrator Pascal Lemaître will also be on display.
March 23 at 5 p.m.: "Une Vie de Chat (A Cat In Paris)"
In this French/Belgian film, a Parisian cat who lives a secret life as a burglar's aide must come to the rescue of Zoe, the little girl he lives with, after she falls into a gangster's clutches. This film is a warm and richly humorous love letter to classic noir and American gangster films, with a jazz soundtrack featuring Billie Holiday. This animated film is suitable for the whole family. There will be a welcome reception as well as children’s treats before the movie. Works by Belgium illustrator Pascal Lemaître will also be on display.
March 24 at 12:30 p.m.: Friendship Brunch
Atlanta's diverse francophone community gathers for an elegant gourmet brunch. Children are welcome.
March 25 at 7 p.m.: Pascal Lemaître Lecture
Pascal Lemaître of Belgium will discuss his career as an illustrator and author by introducing his work including successful partnerships with American novelist Toni Morrison, and author and concentration camp survivor Stéphane Hessel.
